A Star Beyond Space
 “Among
the five [brothers], the two of us shared this unbreakable bond since we were
young. Today [the book launch] is not about me, it is about my brother.”
On
27 March 2008, the official launch of Reaching for the Stars at the grand Istana
Hotel surprised some passersby who were thrilled that they happened to be there
at the time when Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor walked down the red carpet. The
angkasawan’s journey did not only fulfill the grand ambition of having the
first Malaysian venture into space—it managed to change old mindsets by propelling
young Malaysians into considering the frontier of aerospace science. Indeed it
has moved young minds to dare to dream and achieve further heights. “One
of the most important challenges for Malaysians, to realise in our endeavour to
become a truly developed nation, is the challenge to transform our mindsets to
become winners, doers and achievers,” said Deputy Prime Minister YAB Dato’
Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak. The book topped best-sellers lists because
of its insights to the groundbreaking Angkasawan Program and also because it is
a heart-wrenching story about a deep loss in the midst of a celebrating nation.
Reaching for the Stars was actually written by Dr Sheikh Muszaphar's younger brother,
Sheikh Mustapha Shukor Al-Masrie, who died last year after a tragic fall at the
height of the space journey when Dr Sheikh Muszaphar landed back on Earth. His
father, Datuk Sheikh Mustapha Syed Shukor, said in his speech: “Words cannot
describe the feelings of a father who had experienced a joyous occasion and a
tragic moment, both at the same time.” A week later, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar
created another stir when he went to the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair
to promote his book. It is hard to find another star who could overshadow Siti
Nurhaliza, but this time—at a book-signing session moreover—the crowd
mobbed the angkasawan’s table to meet their star and get their books autographed.
