Midnight Fervour

Amidst the excited chattering of primary school students from SRK USJ 12, the adored daughter of our Prime Minister waltzes into the grand area set up beside the MPH outlet in Subang Parade. Puan Nori Abdullah, who is also chairman of Yayasan Budi Penyayang, takes a seat beside the first Malaysian cosmonaut, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, who is another role model for the younger generation.

13 March 2008 was the official launch of the Malay translation of the Mr Midnight series, Detik Tengah Malam. A looming stage with an ominous-looking door was set up, to build up the anticipation among the young audience. Mr Tai Kwai Meng, General Manager of MPH Distributors, believes that the series will continue to appeal to Malaysian children. The translator, Datin Shajaratuddur Halim, better known as Datin Dura, thanked Puan Nori for making the effort to attend this event despite her busy schedule. Datin Dura has known the socialite since she was born, and is familiar with young Nori’s habit of reading. She hopes that all Malaysians will also cultivate this good habit, and on her part she has translated 12 of the 35 books written by James Lee.

Puan Nori stresses that: “I spent a lot of time reading children’s books primarily storybooks in English. To be honest, I did so not because I wasn’t interested in Malay storybooks, but at that time children’s books in Bahasa Malaysia were difficult to get hold of. Until today I feel that the development of children’s book in Bahasa Malaysia are very limited. It’s a shame, because for me, books that I read, especially during childhood, opened my mind – it was these materials that brought the world to me. Books that I considered as my companions and entertainment, also gave all kinds of wisdom and guidance.”

MPH Group Publishing translates popular children’s books into Bahasa Malaysia to enrich the variety of storybooks in the local language, which also helps children to improve their everyday use of Bahasa Malaysia in an enjoyable way. Mr Midnight stories such as ‘My Shoes Have Gone Nuts’ and ‘Have You Been Drinking Brain Juice?’ will undoubtedly amuse their young readers!

Puan Nori ended her speech with hopes that her son will grow up in a better reading environment: “The facilities for writing today are more conducive. Because of that, there is no reason why reading material for children in Bahasa Malaysia cannot develop … A society that reads widely is a society that is highly knowledgeable, with great potential.”

The book launch included spectacular special effects, with smoke circling the stage and horror-movie sound effects. It was followed by performances from the very talented Alya Sabrina bt Jamsari who won the Detik Tengah Malam Storytelling Competition with the story ‘Bas Sekolah Yang Menakutkan’, and a ballet dance by Yootha Tiki Yong to the tune of Beauty and the Beast. Detik Tengah Malam is indeed a delightful addition to the children’s world, from its stunning events to its thrilling stories.
