The
Golden Notebook
by
Lessing, Doris
Anna Wulf is a young novelist with
writer's block. Divorced, with a young child, and disillusioned
by unsatisfactory relationships, she feels her life is falling apart.
Fearing the onset of madness, she records her experiences in four
coloured notebooks. The black notebook addresses her problems as
a writer; the red her political life; the yellow her relationships
and emotions; and the blue becomes a diary of everyday events. But
it is the fifth notebook The Golden Notebook which
is the key to her recovery and renaissance.

My
Name is Red
by
Pamuk, Orhan
At once a fiendishly devious mystery,
a beguiling love story, and a brilliant symposium on the power of
art, My name Is Red is a transporting tale set amid the splendor
and religious intrigue of sixteenth-century Istanbul.
The
Sultan has commisioned a cadre of the most acclaimed artists in
the land to create a great book celebrating the glories of his
realm. Their task: to illuminate the work in the European style.
But because figurative art can be deemed an affront to Islam,
this commission is a dangerous proposition indeed. And when one
of the chosen miniaturist disappears, the only clue to the mystery
lies in the half-finished illuminations themselves. Part fantasy
and part philosophical puzzle, My Name Is Red is a kaleidoscopic
journey into the intersection of art, religion, love and power.

About
the Prize
The Nobel
Prize in Literature (Swedish: Nobelpriset i litteratur) is awarded annually
to an author from any country who has, in the words of Alfred Nobel,
produced "the most outstanding work of an idealistic tendency"
(original Swedish: den som inom litteraturen har producerat det utmärktaste
i idealisk riktning). The "work" in this case refers to an
author's work as a whole, though individual works are sometimes also
cited. The Swedish Academy decides who, if anyone, will receive the
prize in any given year and announces the name of the chosen laureate
in early October.
The original
citation of this Nobel Prize has led to much controversy. In the original
Swedish, the word idealisk can be translated as either "idealistic"
or "ideal". In earlier years the Nobel Committee interpreted
the intent of the will strictly, and did not award certain world-renowned
authors of the time such as Leo Tolstoy and Henrik Ibsen, probably because
their works were not "idealistic" enough. More recently the
wording has been interpreted much more liberally, and the Prize is awarded
allegedly for lasting literary merit. The choice of the Academy can
still cause controversy, particularly for the selection of lesser-known
writers (or writers working in avant garde forms) such as Dario Fo in
1997 and Elfriede Jelinek in 2004.
The Nobel
Prize is not the sole measure of literary excellence and lasting worth.
Critics of the prize point out that many well-known writers have not
been awarded the prize, or even been nominated.
